Tropical

The tropics really speak to my heart. I feel so at home in this climate. I immediately got a sunburn when I got here. I swear I put on sunblock! It felt like a light scolding. “Don’t stay away too long, Briyah. Get yourself to the beach more.” I grew up going to the beach at our family’s beach house in Hull, Massachusetts. It’s a special place, filled with many memories. But it’s in New England. And the water almost always feels freezing to me. I love being able to swim in the ocean.

I got this beautiful Hawaiian dress in Austin, Texas of all places. I found a darling vintage store and picked up a few great pieces. I’ve worn this dress a few times, including to my cousin‘s Hawaiian themed wedding in August 2019. I was so anxious about going to that wedding alone, or single rather. Even though my whole family was there, I had to get a hotel room by myself and was sat at a table with little kids. I just felt bummed. This year, so many weddings were cancelled, including my brother‘s. I felt terrible for them, but for me it was a relief not to have to go to weddings by myself. Or deal with the awkwardness of bringing a new partner. There’s a lot of stress involved that a zoom wedding doesn’t create. Just an interesting observation. I’m sure I’ll get used to weddings again. I paired this dress with beautiful gold Irregular Choice London shoes. They don’t get worn enough. Tonight is my 4th memoir class! I hope this is the one that will finally get me to finish this thing. I’ve decided to focus it on Love Addiction/my relationships during covid.
